In 2012, the bank drew up its first carbon footprint and contributes to climate protection through measures and the promotion of climate protection projects.

Early commitment to climate accounting
Christian Schlömer, Sustainability Manager at Sparda-Bank Hamburg, has been coordinating the bank’s sustainability activities since November 2023. With his many years of experience, he drives forward projects that take both environmental and social aspects into account.
Sparda-Bank Hamburg has been involved in climate accounting for over ten years – long before regulatory requirements obliged companies to report CO₂ emissions. As early as 2012, it carried out a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment and developed strategies for reducing emissions based on this. Sustainability is not a mandatory task for the bank, but a conscious business decision. The structured accounting process enabled it to make its environmental impact more transparent and take targeted measures.
For us, sustainability was never just a regulatory obligation, but a conscious decision. Our carbon footprints help us to better understand our environmental impact and derive targeted measures.

CODE GAIA’S SOLUTION
From manual data collection to digital solutions
Sparda-Bank Hamburg eG has continuously developed its climate accounting in order to make the process more efficient and standardized. The aim was to ensure that the relevant data is always recorded more sustainably and accurately.
In 2024, Sparda-Bank Hamburg decided to use Code Gaia software to simplify its carbon accounting. Code Gaia was chosen due to its ease of use, high flexibility and the use of AI for automated calculation of emissions. The software enables standardized data collection and automated emissions calculations based on stored emission factors, as well as improved visualization of emissions over different time periods. This allows the bank to better track its progress and make informed decisions for further sustainability measures.
Practical measures and current challenges
Sparda-Bank Hamburg has been focusing on measures to reduce its environmental impact for years. A particular focus is on energy efficiency, for example through the widespread use of LED lighting and motion detectors to reduce electricity consumption. In addition, district heating is used at several locations and sustainable materials are increasingly being used in construction and renovation measures.
With the introduction of Code Gaia, the bank was able to significantly simplify the preparation of the carbon footprint and reduce the workload. Reducing Scope 3 emissions remains a key challenge. The bank is therefore examining how environmental aspects can be more closely integrated into its processes and regularly offers its customers sustainable investment and financing solutions.
